Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
Heron
October 4, 2010

While we were taking a walk on the 4th of October at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, we were entertained by a Great Blue Heron splashing into the water to catch a very nice sized trout. When the Great Blue Heron came out of the water with the trout, we were surprised to see the amount of vegetation clinging to the fish. After working very hard to release the fish from its beak which it had used as a spear, the Great Blue Heron manipulated the fish into its mouth. The Great Blue Heron had no trouble at all swallowing the fish leaving the vegetation behind on the log where it was standing. We were sure that would be a satisfying meal for the Great Blue Heron but it continued to hunt; finally satisfying itself with a few insects from the grass on the log before standing in a regal pose to digest its meal.
