July, 2015

July 25, 2015

It was a busy day today, on our daily walk at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.

A large flock of Bushtits were actively hunting for insects along the side of the path.

A Downy Woodpecker was also busy hunting for insects at the side of the path.

A favourite little fellow, this Willow Flycatcher is always on the same leaves every time we go past this area.

While watching a Great Blue Heron fishing, we heard the distinct sounds of juvenile chicks begging for food. We watched it take food to the youngsters clambering for attention. There are still a couple of nests left to fledge at the Heronry.

Belted Kingfishers flew back and forth calling to each other.

The Ospreys are still adding to the nest and the chick is careful to stay out of the way of large sticks.

A few Northern Rough-winged Swallows were on the overhead wires at the main bridge.

Cedar Waxwings were busy in the Hawthorn berries.

The male Common Yellowthroat was seen in long grass.

While we were watching a Beaver, a mother River Otter brought her pup onto the edge of the far bank, wandered along the bank together and slid back into the water. They swam along the bank for awhile, the mother crawled out again but the pup stayed in the water. They carried on with the mother walking on the bank and the pup swimming, the pup got out for a moment until the mother disappeared into the grass so it got back into the water then crawled out to walk along the edge of the bank, exploring until it disappeared into the long grass with its mother.

We had so many Beaver photos today, we decided to give them two journals of their own.

We enjoyed seeing Brenda with Finnegan, Elsie with Molson, Sandra with Izzy and Bob on the trails.
