November, 2016

November 1st to 9th 2016

We enjoyed our usual walks at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, B.C., Canada.

Double-crested Cormorants are back from their nesting sites and will spend most of the winter here.

A few Northwestern Crows were seen in the farm field near the Heronry.

A Northern Harrier flew over them, causing them to chase and attack it.

A Merlin perched in a small tree watching for something to eat.

Beavers were seen on a few days.

A few Red-winged Blackbirds were seen near the Rotary Interpretive Centre.

Golden-crowned Sparrows were seen in a few spots.

There were a few Lincoln’s Sparrows seen on a few days.

An Anna’s Hummingbird was balancing upon a Tansy seed head.

A Pacific Wren was seen one sunny morning.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets were seen showing their crowns to each other one morning.

Song Sparrows are usually seen.

Spotted Towhees were seen as usual.

A few Dark-eyed Juncos were seen, they will be seen in larger flocks over winter.

A male Belted Kingfisher was seen one morning.

Buffleheads were seen paddling and diving on both lagoons. One little male caught a Lamprey. The Lamprey is often referred to as an eel but it is not related to eels. The adult migrates to fresh water where it lays hundreds of thousands eggs in “nests”. The eggs are very small and after 2 or more weeks the tiny blind creatures emerge from the nest to burrow into the mud. They spend 4 or more years here before returning to the ocean where the cycle begins again, after 2 or more years.

A little Pied-billed Grebe floated near debris in the water.

Ring-necked Ducks are often seen at this time of year.

A Northern Pintail was seen as well.

The resident Bald Eagles were seen in the distance, one flew over a flock of American Wigeon, causing them to fly up from the water and land again.

Mallards are always seen in good numbers at this time of year.

Pretty Wood Ducks were seen in large numbers, often with Mallards.

A Gull was standing over a large Salmon at the Vedder River.

We took a walk at Harrison Lake where we saw Horned Grebes and a Great Blue Heron fishing.
