August, 2017

August 28th to 31st 2017

We enjoyed our usual walks at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.

There were very few Beavers this time.

A Black-throated Gray Warbler hopped onto a leaf and was gone after a flying insect.

We saw two Coyotes, (one was the “Coydog”) hunting for rodents.

A Northwestern Crow had a beak full of Red Osier berries.

An Eurasian Collared-Dove peered down at us from its high perch on the Salwein Creek Loop.

A male Downy Woodpecker and a male Hairy Woodpecker were seen near the entrance gate.

A few Purple Finches have been seen over the last weeks.

A Red-tailed Hawk landed in a distant tree and blended with the surrounding colours.

Great Blue Herons were seen on two days.

We often see the American Kestrels in the distance, but today this one, landed near us.

The Eastern Kingbirds were seen. A few Western Tanagers were seen, one was very interested in staying near one of the Eastern Kingbirds.

A Belted Kingfisher landed nearby.

The Ospreys are doing fine. The “twins” posed for some photos.

A Northern Pintail was seen nearby.

There was a Green-winged Teal with it.

A Red-eyed Vireo was seen on the Salwein Creek Loop.

Cedar Waxwings were seen in the same area.

White-crowned Sparrows were seen as well.

Male Wood Ducks are starting to get their winter plumage.

A Yellow Warbler was seen as well.

A Steller’s Jay had a couple of Hazelnuts.

One morning, we saw the Black Bear in the distance, it was quite dark that morning and the sun was behind it, so it was hard to see it. The Black Bear saw us at about the same time and broke into a run straight toward us. We took photos as it continued to run as fast as it could, dust flying and feet high off the ground. It finally got to a spot some distance away from us to be able to get down the bank where there were not any Blackberries. It continued across the water over several logs and into the shrubs without a backward glance at us.
