Mandarin Duck and Wood Ducks

The Mandarin Duck mates for life and is regarded as a symbol of lasting love. They do not bicker among each other. To our surprise, the little Mandarin Duck is a bit of a bully when it comes to other ducks. We watched as he interceded in a friendly moment between a male and female Wood Duck on the water. The Mandarin Duck then proceeded to swim around performing and displaying. Sails raised, drinking and nodding its head.

Another instance happened when a male and female Wood Duck were resting on a log together. The little Mandarin Duck came up behind them and sent them flying. The Mandarin Duck then took over the log to pose.

When we left, the Mandarin Duck was alone with a female Wood Duck on a log. Even though they are very closely related, the Mandarin Duck has a chromosome aberrance which does not allow it to hybridize with other ducks.
