December 2019

December 11th to 14th 2019

We enjoyed our usual walks at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.

Beavers were seen interacting one day. Another day, one Beaver kept getting blackberry stems to eat.

Double-crested Cormorants and Mallards were seen.

A Vancouver Airport tagged immature Bald Eagle was hunting with another immature Bald Eagle in the farm field near the Heronry. We received some information from Gary Searing of Bird Strike Canada, (a program to capture, tag and release birds in danger of being struck by airplanes) https://canadianbirdstrike.ca/ He says “This is the first flying eagle we have captured at YVR - all others have been nestlings. And it is only the 5th eagle we have tagged so your sighting is like the veritable needle in a haystack. It was captured in a Swedish Goshawk Trap on 13 November 2019 and released the next day along the Fraser River east of Chilliwack. Yours is actually the second sighting of this bird since it has been released - it was seen 2 days earlier. Just an aside, when we released this bird, a First Nation family that was along the river at the time joined in and named this bird “spoquis" which means the highest flying eagle.”

Pied-billed Grebes were fishing.

Gray Squirrels were seen near the Rotary Interpretive Centre.

Wood Ducks were seen as usual.

There were a few Bald Eagles along the Vedder River Rotary Trail.

One of the Great Blue Herons was sleeping in its usual tree near the Vedder River.
