May 2020

May 18th & 19th 2020

We enjoyed our usual walks at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.

We saw at least two Beavers one day with a few Wood Ducks and ducklings as well. On another walk, we saw a Beaver in the distance, swimming in circles and splashing the water. This is usually a warning sign to other Beavers to watch out for predators. We could not see any predators but there could have been some in the long grasses.

A male Red-winged Blackbird showed some ingenuity as he flew or hopped from one lily pad to another, then lifted the leaf up to look under it for insects to eat.

Female Common Mergansers were calling and watching for ducklings to claim.

One of the Marsh resident Bald Eagles snatched up a tiny Mallard duckling. Red-winged Blackbirds attacked the Bald Eagle while the mother Mallard displayed to protect her remaining duckling.

A Leucistic Canada Goose flew past us to sit on a log in the distance.

Cottontail Rabbits are seen everywhere at the moment.

Song Sparrows were seen in several areas.

Cedar Waxwings were seen in many areas.
