Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
February 6th to 9th 2011

Four more walks at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve were full of activity. Some days, we really have to watch carefully for signs of birds and others are quite busy.

Bufflehead Ducks can be found on one or other of the lagoons.

Black-capped Chickadees are usually an easy bird to find.

Double-crested Cormorants were there as usual. Another Double-crested Cormorant on a log is something we expect when we take our walks at this time of year.

Bald Eagles are coming inland from the rivers because the rivers have risen and it is hard for them to find fish.

Northern Red-shafted Flickers were found.

The resident Canada Geese have returned to stake out their territory for nesting before some other goose claims it.

Pied-billed Grebes were seen, they usually are on one of the lagoons.

The lone Gull is still visiting.

Great Blue Heron were in the trees at the East Bird Blind.

Steller’s Jays were raucously calling to each other.

Here is a photo of the North Lagoon from the area made for the Painted Turtles.

Mallards were seen as usual.

A small flock of Ring-necked Ducks paddled past us while the rest were on the South Lagoon.

A female Green-winged Teal was behind the East Bird Blind.

American Wigeon are usually found on the South Lagoon but there were some behind the East Bird Blind.

There was a Wood Duck conference going on at the East Bird Blind which had a large attendance.

We enjoyed our usual visits with Jean, Tony, Dick, Barb, Val, Janet, Mike, Mary and Barbara at the Rotary Interpretive Centre.
