Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
May 1st to 5th 2011

We are back to taking our daily walk at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve.

Spring is trying to show itself, not by the weather but by the flowers in bloom.

Red-winged Blackbirds are always around at this time of year.

A female Bufflehead surprised us on the North Lagoon.

Bushtits were foraging along the Salwein Creek paths.

House Finches were pulling Cherry Blossoms to chew on the ends for nectar and insects.

Red-tailed Hawks soared overhead.

Great Blue Herons are at their nests and easily found there. A surprise was a young Great Blue Heron just one year old foraging behind the East Bird Blind.

A few Dark-eyed Juncos are still foraging along the paths.

Common Mergansers were seen on both lagoons.

A Milbert’s Tortoiseshell Butterfly paused on the ground near the Heronry.

We found several River Otters over the last few days.

American Robins are back in the area now.

Yellow-rumped Warblers decorated the trees with their pretty flashes of yellow as we walked along.

It is easy to find Wood Ducks at the East Bird Blind at this time of year.

A first time sighting for us at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve was a male and female Harlequin Duck.

We stopped in at the Rotary Interpretive Centre for visits with Orson, Val, Barb, Janet, Cynthia, Eileen, Yvonne, Muriel, Alice and Leon. We also enjoyed a visit on the trails with Jenny, Bill and Guy.
