Point Reyes, California
Point Reyes National Seashore
April 20, 2011

We were talking to Bob about Acorn Woodpeckers and he suggested that it would be a sure thing to see them at Point Reyes National Seashore in the picnic area beside the parking lot near the Interpretive Centre. It was on our way so we pulled into the parking lot and with a slight mist in the air we were delighted to hear the Acorn Woodpeckers calling to each other in the trees over the picnic tables. We saw them for a moment but they headed high into the upper canopy so we took a walk around a loop for awhile. Along the path we stood on the fault line at Point Reyes one day after the 100th year anniversary of Point Reyes Peninsula leaping 20 feet northwestwardly during the big earthquake of San Francisco in 1906. Moss dripped from the trees.

After our walk, we stopped to take photos of a covey of California Quail feeding on both sides of the road into the parking lot.

Back to the Acorn Woodpeckers as they showed up vocalizing, totally distracting us from the Quail. There were three of them on the side of one of their acorn stash trees. One was particularly vocal and waving his wings around as he ran up the tree after the two higher up.

We enjoyed watching them for quite awhile and again want to thank Bob for his accurate directions on finding them.
