Cannon Beach, Oregon
April 23, 2011

We arrived back at Cannon Beach on the 23rd to find it packed with people enjoying sun, surf, restaurants, parks and gift shops. The parking was at a premium and we were hungry so we parked at The Wayfarer to have lunch. Before lunch, we took a walk out to Haystack Rock behind the Wayfarer for another look at the Puffins. The beach was jammed with people, some surfing, some riding low tricycles, some playing games, some beach combing and some visiting the Tufted Puffins where the Haystack Rock Awareness Program was set up with spotting scopes and very knowledgeable people to help with information not just about Puffins but about the sea creatures such as Sea Stars as well.

We enjoyed watching the little birds flying overhead into their nesting burrows.

A group of excited people grabbed us to take us to a “Puffin” near the shore, playing in the waves. We were just as excited when it turned out to be a Surf Scoter which swam right up to us for a close up. We couldn’t have been more pleased that they called us over to see it. Everyone was thrilled that the Scoter wanted to get closer for a photo. We were thrilled that people were so friendly on our whole road trip.

A special thanks to all the folks at Wayfarer Restaurant & Lounge, Ken at the desk and Katie our evening server, you made our lunches and dinners very special while we were there. Also, thank you to the girls at Van Buren Lighthouse Inn, you made our overnight stays on the beginning and end of our trip extraordinary. After driving close to 4000km, walking around 86km and taking over 6000 photos, we are home again and really appreciate everyone that we came in contact with during our road trip. Thank you U.S.A., your land and people are GREAT!
